Theories of Development Cognitive Theory and Behaviorism ...
Off the five developmental theories, I would like to describe and explain two grand theories, Cognitive theory and Behaviorism. The main concepts of cognitive theory focuses on the developmental process of thinking and how this process affects our actions, attitudes, beliefs and assumptions through a life span. Jean Piaget, Swiss biologist and proponent of cognitive theory, developed a general thesis of cognitive theory; he divided the developmental process of thinking into four stages. He said ââ¬Å"the way people think changes with age as their brains mature and their experiences challenge their past assumptionsâ⬠(Berger, 8th edition, 2009)â⬠. In my opinion, we use and apply the main concepts of the cognitive theory in everyday life,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦People in special needs might be different, but they are smart in their own way, amazingly imaginative and very appreciative. Although their life is diverse and uneasy, they always are thankful for another day. They thought me to be a better person and I learned to respect them. These new experiences challenged my past assumptions a nd beliefs. The second theory I would like to talk about is Behaviorism. The main concept of behaviorism is observing human behavior. It is also called a learning theory because it describes the process of learning. Behaviorism is described as a force of habit, meaning that after we learn a certain behavior we repeat it without even thinking about it. The most known proponent of behaviorism was John Watson who believed that scientists should only examine what can be seen or measured, which in this case is a personââ¬â¢s behavior. Another famous behaviorist was Ivan Pavlov, the proponent of classical condition, which is another concept of behaviorism. Classical conditioning focuses on repetition and practice, which Ivan Pavlov proved in an experiment with a salivating dog. B.F. Skinner, one of the most influential psychologists believed in operational conditioning, which explains that consequences, punishment or reinforcement respond to our behavior. I have applied this theory toward my son who is three years old. He is a very curious boy who likes to see how far he can go with his behavior. Essay on Health Disparities of elderly population
The purpose of this paper is to illuminate and discuss healthcare vulnerabilities of the elderly rural population in Baker County, Florida and describe how the nursing profession can address these problems. Rural health has been a complex and multifaceted challenge for government and healthcare practitioners. The elderly who live alone in the county suffer from low socioeconomic status, low health literacy rates, declining cognitive and physical health and lack of healthcare facilities. The health status of this vulnerable group is impacted by rural culture and social values, healthcare policy and funding affecting rural healthcare facilities, distance and lack of transportation, and health literacy. Method A review of current nursingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Consequently, these trends coupled with low health literacy result in rankings of 63rd and 64th in the state for morbidity and mortality respectively. Discussion Healthy People 2020 basically describes a health disparity as a difference in health trends in a community that is closely related to low socio-economics. Disparities adversely affect populations who have experienced greater obstacles to health based on their socioeconomic status, age, mental health or other characteristics historically linked to systematic discrimination or exclusion (Healthy People 2020). Identifying and addressing health disparities for the rural elderly has been a great challenge. Problems of the elderly who live alone in poverty in Baker County are considerable when additional factors such as increased physical limitations, medical needs, and social isolation are taken into account. As a vulnerable population, the rural elderly are affected by their low socioeconomic standing, lower literacy rates, declining health, declines in cognitive functioning and relative lack of available nearby health resources. Mathematical Investigations and Discussions
Question: Discuss about theMathematical Investigations and Discussions. Answer: Introduction: When students become efficient in measuring lengths with the help of using non-standard units, they are prepared to use the standard units. When students use various non-standard units in order to measure the same length it provides them with the experience which in turn acts as a motivating factor for the students to move to the stage of using standard units. In the metric system, meter and centimeters are the two mentionable standard units of measurement (Nzmaths.co.nz, 2014). The fact that uniformity in the units would provide them with accurate and easier communication of length measurements can be appreciated by the students. Introducing Centimeter First In primary schools the usual progression of introducing standard units of measurement is to introduce centimeter first. The reason being the fact that centimeter as standard unit of measurement is small enough with the help of which common objects can be measured. There are some other reasons associated with introduction of the concept of centimeter first in the students. This aspect includes the feature of constructing centimeters with the help of cutting one-centimeter pieces of straws or papers which contributes in the establishment of the size of the unit of centimeters. Other than that the fact that most of the primary schools are provided with a supply of one centimeter cubes that helps in the measurement of objects also leads to the introduction of centimeter first in the class. Learning Experiences In the process of introduction of centimeters there are number of learning experiences that are associated with it. With the help of various experiences in the process of measurement of everyday objects an appreciation of the units size can be formulated. In the process of introducing it the learning experience should consist of encouraging the students in the development of their own reference for centimeter like a fingertip (Tucker et al., 2006). The experience of introducing centimeter to the student the learning experience consist of providing them with the opportunities in order to estimate prior to measuring once the students become familiar with the centimeters size. Once the students have been introduced to the use of centimeter units in order to measure objects it can be followed by introducing them to the centimeter ruler. In the beginning of the process the students are required to build up their own ruler. As an instance, linked cubes that can be connected in order to for m 10 centimeter rulers are present in some classrooms. In place of that, the students can also be provided with drinking straws pieces which can be threaded together. In the learning process of the experience is required to be enriched with specific instruction with the help of which they can determine accurate use of ruler in order to measure objects. Clarification is another aspect required to be provided in the learning experience of the students with the help of which zeros correct alignment on the ruler with one end of the ruler requires explanation. Language and Tools In the communication process while introducing centimeter to the class language plays a vital role. It should include development of simple formulas with the help of the understanding of the aspect. In the process simply providing idea that a formula is applicable to all objects for that element will not be sufficient (Reys, 2006). The communication process and language should incorporate number of activities including the outdoor ones, like asking the students to draw an outline of their hand and measure the largest handspan. In this process the equipments and tools that can be used by the children are ice-cream containers, measuring spoons, cardboards, 1cm cubes, meter rulers etc. Introducing Children to Meter First It needs to be mentioned here, as centimeter as a standard unit of measurement is less in value than meter, students may face problem while measuring elements which are bigger in length. Along with it, with the concept of meter the children can easily grasp the concept of centimeter. This makes many education providers perceive that meter is required to be introduce first to the children. The reason behind this being the fact that once children can calculate the length of longer elements which can be performed with the help of the idea of meters they can easily measure elements with centimeters which is required to calculate elements which are smaller in lengths (Fuson et al., 2011). Thus faults in measurement will be limited with the increase in accuracy level. Conclusion It can be concluded by stating that, providing the perspective of standard units is a complex process. Hence while providing children which these concepts effective communication emphasizing upon the language and the use of specific tool is essential. By encouraging the children to participate in activities especially the outdoor ones, their idea can be made clear about standard units. Personal Response Essay - Jeffrey Andreoniââ¬â¢s Why Canââ¬â¢t I Feel What I See free essay sample
Personal Response Essay: Jeffrey Andreoniââ¬â¢s Why Canââ¬â¢t I Feel What I See Jeffrey Andreoni states in his article ââ¬Å"Why Canââ¬â¢t I Feel What I Seeâ⬠that happiness was much easier attained by the generation born in the first third of last century than more recent generations. The idea presented to explain this statement is that recently we as a society decided that happiness is to be measured ââ¬Å"in terms of material gainâ⬠(3); when really all that is needed for happiness is to create things with our hands. To illustrate this, he compares himself to his grandfather; who was a poor carpenter with very few possessions. I can understand and even relate to Andreoniââ¬â¢s idea of why his grandfather was much happier. Reading his article might have even explained why I personally feel the way I do. Firstly, I agree with Andreoniââ¬â¢s idea that in our recent past, humans began requiring some ââ¬Å"observable proof of happinessâ⬠(3), that happiness could only be measured in material gains. We will write a custom essay sample on Personal Response Essay Jeffrey Andreoniââ¬â¢s Why Canââ¬â¢t I Feel What I See or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I believe the media has been a large player in creating this social belief. It is often advertisements that push this idea onto us that more is better; that we should always keep up to date with the latest electronic products and hottest fashion trends. How often do advertisements pitch forth the idea of happiness without having to purchase something? I have personally seen very few of such advertisements. Another idea of Andreoniââ¬â¢s that I agreed with was the idea that happiness comes from creating things with our hands. Although I can only speak for myself, and I cannot definitively confirm his idea, I can confidently say there is a relationship between the two. When my family first moved to Canada I remember spending a lot of time watching my father build furniture for our home. I was mesmerized by how easily he converted raw building supplies into bed frames, wardrobes, and tables. After building up enough knowledge of power tools, I was able to start building my own tree fort at the age of eleven. Two years later, standing fifteen feet above the ground, I had a fort with a waterproof roof, a retractable hammock, and a locking hatch through which only friends could enter. I was very proud of my creation. Unfortunately, two years after its completion, it had to be torn down on the grounds that one of the trees to which it was attached, died and was no longer bearing the weight of the fort. After two years of hard work, my castle had to come down from the trees and be thrown into a pile of rotting lumber. Despite its destruction, I felt no grief or sorrow. I was proud of what I had created, and this prideà continues to bring me happiness today. Although Andreoniââ¬â¢s idea of creating things with our hands is one way of making ourselves happy, I believe there are other things that bring us just as much, if not more, joy. The positive experiences I have had with my close friends have definitely brought me a great deal of happiness as well. Several years ago I went on an RV trip with two close friends across British Columbia; the beautiful scenery combined with the hooliganism that we got ourselves into during the trip will be something I will remember for a lifetime. Just like anything I have created with my hands, I will be able to look back on this experience and get joy from the memories it has created. Generally speaking, I agreed with most of what Andreoni has written about, and I strongly relate to his idea of using our hands. Although I also believe that the methods for attaining happiness are unique to each individual.

Land degradation in Australia
Land degradation in Australia is a very serious and difficult environmental problem, as Australia is dependent on agricultural practices. (See land use in Australia.) Urban sprawl, land pollution, salinisation, and soil erosion may cause Land degradation after land clearing, or waterlogging through changes to the water table. Deforestation is a major issue that dramatically affects the land quality in Australia, as much of the native vegetation is replaced with insufficient ground cover used for various uses. One of the possible solutions could be to use genetically modified foods. Deforestation has been occurring for thousands of years. The lands used for cultivating crops worldwide were once forests. Humans have logged trees for a number of reasons, which include the need for timber, and space for agriculture, towns and cities. Though as it is a long-term effect it is very hard to reverse. This is because many environmental factors are caused over long periods of time, and then, once identified, will take a long time to solve. Urban sprawl is when cities expand from overpopulation and join adjacent towns and suburbs. The main problem associated with urbanisation is how most urban areas cannot support themselves. They only survive by importing food, water, energy, minerals and other resources whilst polluting enormous quantities of waste products that are produced. (See Typical Daily Inputs and Outputs of Matter and Energy for a U.S city of 1 million people.) Most urban areas have very little natural vegetation to absorb the air pollution, and to give out fresh oxygen; this isnt a good thing, as these areas produce large quantities of air pollution, water pollution, and solid wastes. Recycling is one of the environmental benefits of urbanisation because of the large amount of recycling materials in a concentrated area. This also reduces the stress on wildlife habitats, and therefore helps to preserve biodiversity. Soil de...

Undecided - Essay Example s their major differences are concerned, it is worth noting that the color, genetic make-up, function, lifespan, fur, and flexibility are major factors. Therefore, this paper highlights the major differences and similarities between the behaviors of a donkey and a horse. Despite the fact that both donkeys and horses are domestic animals commonly known as ââ¬Ëbeasts of burden,ââ¬â¢ it is important to note that they exhibit similar social behavior, especially when it comes to cooperation with human beings. In essence, human beings tame both animals so that they can help humans in performing certain task that humans alone cannot handle. They both respond well to human instructions they will handle any turf task before them as long as they remain well fed. In this respect, it is critical to note that both donkeys and horses can be used to transport goods and human beings, or they can even haul heavy loads for human beings. Perhaps the only difference between the two animals in this respect is that one is faster than the other is. Perhaps the major behavioral difference between a donkey and a horse lies in their perception and response to danger or threat. As for the horse, speed is the ultimate way of escaping from any real or perceived danger or threat. Indeed, a horse will not give a second thought to any object that poses a threat to its life. It is especially swift to flee besides its significant speed over long distances. On the other hand, a donkey is usually stubborn to threats and it will prefer to face the threat before thinking of an alternative course of action. It means that a donkey is more likely to suffer harm than a horse due to its attitude towards danger. When the two animals are in combat with their ââ¬Ëenemy,ââ¬â¢ a horse prefers the hind kicks while a donkey will throw hind kicks in addition to bites. Lastly but more importantly, donkeys and horses make different sounds, although the sounds may have some similarities, especially to an inattentive ear.

Physiological vs. Technological birth Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Physiological vs. Technological birth - Essay Example Before a choice is made, one however has to analyze the pros and cons associated with both the normal physiological route of delivery and technology assisted cesarean section (Lowden, 2002; Cohen, 2003). In an age where time is considered equivalent to money it is not surprising when people opt for quicker and also pain-free delivery procedures rather than time-consuming vaginal ones. Many mothers also have a constant fear about the passage of a baby through the birth canal and a c-section prevents all these anxieties. Additionally the oozing of the amniotic fluid, excretion of human wastes in some cases, sweat and tears which are normally associated with normal vaginal birth is also avoided. In other words, a c-section ensures a more clean and hygienic delivery in keeping up with the modern trend. While these are the pros associated with a c-section, one should also consider the after-effects of such a procedure. The procedure does ensure a pain-free delivery, however, post-op there are several problems which have to be overcome by the mother. The pain after a c-section persists for a while and the mother would have to take pain killers and in case they have an infection they will have to take more drugs to control them. There is also the burden of the scar left from the surgery which would present for quite a long time. The time taken to recover is more compared to that of normal pregnancies and hence such mothers cannot get into their routine for quite some time. Thus if the mother has other small children it would be quite a task to manage them. Above all, the risk of maternal death is high in cesarean sections as compared to vaginal deliveries. The presence of a scar or any other tissues after delivery can also lead to other problems such as bowel obstructions or infertility and might affect subsequent pregnancies. Moreover research also states that cesarean mothers are

Factors that Influence Health and Well-being
Factors that Influence Health and Well-being DOINA BORSAN UNIT 11 LO3 Relevant factors that influence health and wellbeing Organization is an social unit of people that is structured and managed to meet a need or to pursue collective goals. All organizations have a management structure that determines relationships between the different activities and the members, and subdivides and assigns roles, responsibilities, and authority to carry out different tasks. Organizations are open systemsthey affect and are affected by their environment. To be able to give a clear definition of health needs assessment, health and needs will be looked at separately to understand the appropriate meaning of these words. Firstly, health is described by the World Health Organisation (WHO, 1948) as ââ¬Å"a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely on the absence of a diseases or infirmityâ⬠. With no changes made since 1948, this definition is still well known due to the holistic overview of health and not only the disease. The definition of the word need or needs can be defined in a professional perspective as a necessity within poverty or to lack something. (English Dictionary, 2005) This need can be for any individual and within Maslowââ¬â¢s pyramid it is a motivational theory in psychology that argues that while people aim to meet basic needs, they seek to meet successively higher needs in the form of a hierarchy of importance. In my opinion, good health is a unity of three aspects, the physical, mental, and societal aspects .The physically content ,able to perform everyday tasks without discomfort. The mentally stable the individual must feel adequately fulfilled in life may urge to achieve excellence .The society and environment to be healthy, must live in a surrounding that can accommodate the individualââ¬â¢s pursuit for health in relation to sociological perspectives. Wellness is when is satisfied with health and quality of life with all aspects such as family, friends, income, giving the individual contentedness. Some determinant factors and their benefits, that contribute to a persons current state of health can be: Pollution -The pea-souper smog that is famous for cloaking London right up until the 1960s is one example of the effects of over industrialisation ,cause a number of accidents (the smog severely limited visibility), also had a very negative effect on the respiration of the populace. Access to health and welfare services Communities are not just isolated from health and welfare services by distance, but some are unable to gain access because they feel that they have been let down by health services before, or they do not speak the language that the service is delivered in. For these isolated communities, the health and welfare services may be the only link that they have to help them understand the development issues that the rest of society takes seriously. Family relationships -Not all family relationships are good, aside from the more obvious cases of abuse, there are lots of ways in which members of our family can adversely affect our health. The family member may not even realise that they are having a negative effect on our growth and development. Friendships -Good friends are the ideal support network to stop us from getting so upset about something that we fall into depression. Not only do they cheer us up whenever we see them, but talking to them about our worries also stops us worrying so much .At certain points during our life, though, friendships may break down ââ¬â taking with them our feelings of stability. Educational experience The amount of education you should have, in theory, allow you to better evaluate the opportunities that arise through life. Poor education can result in serious poverty ââ¬â one of the main causes of ill health. Employment Everyday, hundreds of people die because they work too hard. Being unhappy in your job can make you drink excessively and working large amounts of overtime means that you may not have enough time to exercise correctly or eat a well-balanced meal. Ethnicity and religion Different cultures and religions have different ways of looking at the world .More extreme religious rituals that affect health, such as female circumcision, are outlawed in the UK. Genetic inheritance the role that genes play in our lives, they can transmit some disorders from one generation to another or make us more susceptible to some illnesses or disabilities. Diet -Not getting the right amount of food, or a decent nutritional balance within that food, may have a negative effect on the growth and development of an individual. Physical exercise People who do different types of physical exercise develop different body types, exercise is important in the health care . Illness and disease individuals do not grow or develop at the same rate as all those around them, everybody develops at a different rate anyway. Family relationships People who come from stable, loving families have a less difficult time developing socially and emotionally. Family relationships can be some of the strongest we will ever have. Friendships You can choose your friends, but you cant choose your family, as they say. Sometimes, chatting with friends is the only thing that keeps you sane, especially after a blazing row with the family. Intimate personal and sexual relationships become the most significant of your life, theres nothing more special than making a real connection with someone. A relationship (or partnership) can significantly shape your personal development. The World Health Organization (WHO) created the Commission on Social Determinants of Health, which uses the three principles to guide its work in eliminating health inequities for local communities and nations and throughout the world: Improve the conditions of daily lifeââ¬âthe circumstances in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. Tackle the inequitable distribution of power, money, and resourcesââ¬âthe structural drivers of those conditions of daily lifeââ¬âglobally, nationally, and locally. Measure the problem, evaluate action, expand the knowledge base, develop a workforce that is trained in the social determinants of health, and raise public awareness about the social determinants of health . In the content of health and wellbeing factors , the education have a significant part in people development. It gives us the opportunity to learn about ourselves, acquire social skills and spreads influential messages about health. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is committed to achieving improvements in peoples lives by reducing health inequities. Health organizations, institutions, and education programs are encouraged to look beyond behavioural factors and address underlying factors related to social determinants of health. Native Peoples in Canada Today -- Cultural Expression :: Essays Papers
Native Peoples in Canada Today -- Cultural Expression Greater political influence and Canada's official policy of multiculturalism have both contributed to a dramatic increase in the cultural activity of Native Canadians in the latter part of the twentieth century. Government sponsorship of the arts, with, in particular, its tendency to support the work of those from "ethnic minorities", has granted a degree of public exposure to artists who would otherwise have had great difficulty in getting it. This page only discusses First Nations literature written in English, although there is plenty going on in the other arts, and in Native languages. Natives who write in English and who are published by a mainstream publisher are inevitably participating in the public sphere of the settler culture, and this fact produces all kinds of interesting tensions in their work, because they are very often trying to recover some sort of sense of indigineity, trying to re-establish connections with traditional cultures whose remoteness or tenuousness is a function of the dominant culture with which they are engaging. The best of the writers recognise this as an inescapably problematic situation, and seek to use the contradiction as a source of creative energy. One of the commonest ways of exploring this is the attempt to bring traditional oral story telling features into the written literary format. This can be done through the inclusion of aural effects such as repetition, or through the inclus ion of traditional characters. One of the problems which Western critics and readers face when confronted by Native literature is that there is a danger when it comes to the application of Western norms of interpretation and evaluation. Native texts can often work in unfamiliar ways and serve unfamiliar purposes. Thus, a reader who is expecting a narrative progression and climax from a piece of prose may well be disappointed. What Native writers are very often trying to achieve with their writing is a kind of pictorial representation of a community, without the privileging of particular characters or events. These stories can often be interpreted more readily as an embodiment of Native values and cultural codes.

Public Health P1. P2
Public Health ââ¬â Unit 12 ââ¬â Petra P1 Public health is ââ¬Å"the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individualsâ⬠(1920, C. E. A. Winslow). This therefore infers public health is the preventing and controlling of disease within communities, to prolong life and promote health through organised society. The keys aspects of public health â⬠¦ -Monitoring the overall health status of the population, this involves the recording of any changes of health in the population and alerting people to potential risks, for example the higher levels of smoking within a population. -Identifying the health needs within a population, which involves establishing patterns and trends of health problems within to identify implications service users may be at risk of, for example in relation to smoking, assessing the likely increase in need for cancer support services. Developing programmes to reduce the risk and screening for diseases earlier on, which refers to the attempts of reducing the levels of illness, by introducing new programmes which inform people that they are at risk of certain conditions and aiding them into trying out new preventative programmes? For example if a doctor identifies someone at risk from cancer due to smoking, they may enrol them on a programme to help stop smoking, or even provide them with medication to stop them smoking. -Controlling of communicable disease. This is the reduction of the impact of infectious disease, through immunisation and other control methods. For example, vaccinations against measles, mumps and rubella, it may also include food hygiene in restaurants and other food suppliers preventing food poisoning. ââ¬â Health promotion to the population. This can be done by events and activities which reduce health implications. For example, for people suffering with obe sity, it may involve campaigns to encourage people to be more active and eat a better diet, like the 5 a day campaign. Planning and evaluating the provision of health and social care, which involves assessing health services and whether or not they are having enough impact on the initial problem, for example in the case of obesity, it may involve the question of, can local services meet the demand of weight management advice, or are the services being successful in helping people to reduce their weight and endure that change. P2 Public health has grown and improved since its creation in the 19th century. It was created from the Poor Law system and the Victorian sanitary reform movement. The Poor Law was in place, to ensure people of the lower working class(poor people) were being housed properly, whether it were in workhouses or their own homes, it also ensured they were appropriately clothed and fed a sufficient amount of food. In a lot of workhouses, children were also schooled a l ittle, and in return for this treatment, the working class would be obliged to work for several hours a day.During industrialisation and the fast growth in cities, standards began to fall, which led to many concerns involving poor housing, dirty water supplies and air pollution ââ¬Ëbad airââ¬â¢ and the immense impacts this had on the health of the work population all together. Origins of the public health policy in the UK from the 19th Century to present dayâ⬠¦ The nineteenth century;- The first national Public Health Act 1848 This was created and put into place, due to a man known as Edwin Chadwick. He was an active campaigner on many public health issues, such as the poor working/housing conditions and the sanitary reform. His report in 1842 included a massive amount of evidence supporting the link between environment, poverty and ill health. He recommended that each local authority required an expert medical and civil engineering advice, to administer all sanitary matter s. It took six years until the Public Health act was passed and the first Board of health was established. John Snow and the Broad Street pump John Snow was a man whom believed that the water pollution was the main cause of ill health within the population of London in the 19th Century. He linked the common illness cholera to people whom drank from the wells. He observed those getting ill and which areas and pumps they drank from and recorded it on a map, he was then able to establish all those getting ill were in fact drinking from the same pump, and consequently in 1854 John Snow removed the handle of the Broad Street pump and ceased the epidemic of Cholera in Soho, London John Simon and the 1866 Sanitary Act John Simon was professionally a physician, but he became famous for him dramatic reforms of the public health system. He was the first medical officer in the UKââ¬â¢s central government, and he influenced public health by improving public vaccination systems. He also was the founder of the water supply cleaner and made sewers more effective. The twentieth century The Beveridge Report 1942 William Beveridge was a man whom was asked by government to write a report on the best and most effective ways to help those on low incomes. This was after the Second World War when people felt they needed rewarding, which the government responded to by promising to create a more equal society. In Beveridgeââ¬â¢s report in December 1942, he proposed that all people of a working age should contribute, which would benefit people who were sick, unemployed, retired, or widowed. The National Health Service (NHS) The NHS was created on the back of the Beveridge report. This allowed free care to those who could not afford it. It provided hospital services, primary care (doctors- family clinics) and community services such as health visitors, midwives, ambulance services and many more. Acheson Report into inequalities in health 1998 He comprised a report that pointed out 39 recommendations and highlighted 3 crucial areas of which would need concentrating on, which are; 1) all policies that are likely to have impact on health should be evaluated in terms of their impact on health inequality. ) Priority to the health of families with children. 3) Further steps should be taken to reduce the income inequalities and improve the standards of poor households. Our Healthier Nation 1999 This strategy was released by the labour government after their election in 1997, it has very clear links with the Acheson report and attempted to tackle the root causes of ill health such as pollution, unemployment, low wages, crime and poor housing.Choosing Health: Making Healthy Choices Easier 2004 This white paper acknowledged the changing nature in society, and an increased emphasis on health and well-being. The strategy had three key underpinning principles: informal choice, personalization and working together. Its main priorities were: to reduce the number of people who smoke, reduce obesity and improve diet and nutrition, increase exercise, encourage support of sensible drinking and the improvement of overall sexual health.

How to Become a Nursing Assistant
How to Become a Nursing Assistant If youââ¬â¢re looking to start a career in the healthcare industry, you have lots of options. Patient care! Tech! Administration! The entire field is growing, and with it grows the demand for qualified health care professionals. But no matter how many new jobs open up in the trendiest areas, there will always be a huge demand for the ââ¬Å"evergreenâ⬠medical jobs: for doctors, nurses, and medical staff who work on the front lines, helping patients. If you think youââ¬â¢d like to be one of these front-line healthcare staffers, working as part of a patient care team, then becoming a certified nursing assistant (CNA) just might be the right path for you. What Does a Nursing Assistant Do?CNAs work directly with patients under the direction of physicians and nurses, providing basic care. CNAs work virtually anywhere there are healthcare facilities, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and doctorsââ¬â¢ offices. CNAs may work with a variety of patients during a shift, or they may have a more one-on-one relationship with a smaller group of patients. CNAs are often a liaison for the patient, making sure that they have everything they need or working with a team of other medical professionals to ensure that a patient is receiving a particular level of care.A CNAââ¬â¢s tasks may include:Assisting patients with everyday tasks like eating, bathing, and dressingTaking vital signsHelping to prepare patients for surgeryChecking and emptying cathetersMaking beds and cleaning patient roomsSetting up medical equipmentAdministering prescribed medicationAssisting physicians and nurses with medical proceduresObserve and record patient status and changesNursing assistants are responsible for meeting the most basic needs of patients, and for providing a high level of personal care. What Skills Do Nursing Assistants Have?Because nursing assistants are one of the primary caregivers for their patients, they need to have very strong skills and beds ide manner.Patient Care SkillsIn addition to the medical know-how necessary to do the job, nursing assistants also need to have strong customer care and service skills. The nursing assistant will be working with a range of patients, and potentially interacting with families as well, so itââ¬â¢s important to have a calm, caring, and understanding professional game face.Attention to DetailIf things are missed, it can have serious consequences for a patient. Nursing assistants needs to have an eagle eye for detail, and a passion for making sure everything is done correctly and on time, whether itââ¬â¢s administering medication or feeding a patient her meals.Communication SkillsNursing assistants need to be able to communicate with a number of different people: patients, other staff members, and patient families. Being able to understand whatââ¬â¢s going on, and communicate to others as necessary, is essential.Teamwork SkillsNursing assistants are key members of a patient care team. That means being a lone wolf just wonââ¬â¢t work in this job. It also means a nursing assistant has to be able to work well (and take orders when necessary) from other members of the healthcare team, all in the interest of the patient.Organizational SkillsBecause nursing assistants often spend the most time directly with patients, keeping everything moving along on schedule is key. Many nursing assistants are juggling a number of patients at a time, so keeping patients and information organized is key so that there are no mistakes disruptions to care. What Education Do Nursing Assistants Need?At a minimum, nursing assistants typically need a high school diploma (or equivalent). Beyond that, they will need to complete a Nursing Assistant course from an accredited school, which typically lasts from 4 to 16 weeks.Once you have your Nursing Assistant program diploma, youââ¬â¢ll need to be certified by your own state. Requirements vary by state, so be sure to see whatââ¬â¢s required in your state if youââ¬â¢re interested in pursuing this path. Many states also require you to pass a certification exam before you can become a practicing CNA.How Much Do Nursing Assistants Get Paid?According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical assistants make a median salary of $26,590 per year, or $12.78 per hour, depending on location and experience. Many nursing assistants also go on to other, more advanced nursing or patient care roles as they gain more experience.Whatââ¬â¢s the Outlook for Nursing Assistants? This is definitely a promising field! The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for nursing assistants will increase by 17% by 2024. That is much faster than average, compared to all other careers. Caring, compassionate professionals who can provide high-quality patient care will always be in high demand. If youââ¬â¢re considering going into the healthcare field, and are ready for the challenges of providing hands-on care, t hen this could be the right choice for your career. Good luck!

Leadership in healthcare practice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Leadership in healthcare practice - Essay Example This essay Leadership in healthcare practice discusses that developing skills and determination for goal achievements must be a priority in career development. Leadership is a crucial aspect of healthcare practice that has a direct implication into planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating and budgeting for both the human resources and other working aids within a health care delivery facility. It is important to acquire leadership skills in a nursing training course, as it forms a basis for enabling cooperation and collaboration with other health care personnel to improve health care quality. Analysis of leadership presented in this paper encompasses on a personal reflection on the personââ¬â¢s leadership abilities based on the five elements of leadership ie, vision, communication skills, change, stewardship, and developing and renewing followers. I believe I possess the best communication skills in relation to my peers. Growing up as a child, I came to learn of the importance of listening as a tool for the development of communication. I thus have a strength with my listening skills that enables me to acquire concrete information and ideas that can be effectively presented to others. However, being timid is my most weakness in relation to communication skills. In as much as I can maintain a concrete communication and presentation to a tiny audience, I find it cumbersome to speak to a large audience or a meeting and a forum, thus making me not to be as articulate as when talking to a small group.

Critical Paper Dulce Et Decorum Est Essay Example for Free
Critical Paper Dulce Et Decorum Est Essay Wilfred Owenââ¬â¢s Dulce et Decorum Est is a forlorn poem of his experience in the First World War. Owen recounts his story as he and fellow infantrymen march ââ¬Ëknock-kneed, coughing like hagsââ¬â¢ across the wasteland that is the battle front(line 2). Most of the focus is on the exhaustion from battle, but changes attention when ââ¬Ëhootsââ¬â¢ of gas-shells rain down on their position. Weariness quickly turns to ââ¬ËAn ecstasy of fumblingââ¬â¢ (line 9) as the soldiers fit their gas masks, but one soldier is not fast enough. Owen then relates his first hand tale and demise of the footman chocking to death from mustard gas. The reader is forced to witness this horrid death and ask ourselves; ââ¬ËDulce et descorum est,/Pro patria moriââ¬â¢ (line 27-28). Lines 1-8 are used to describe a scene of war-torn men on a forced march across a wasteland. Such phrases as, ââ¬Ëold beggarsââ¬â¢, and ââ¬Ëcoughing like hagsââ¬â¢ gives the reader an idea of what condition that the infantrymen are in. Such phrases denote a negative image as to associate the infantrymen as vagrants in poor physical condition. With those who ââ¬Ëlost their bootsââ¬â¢ now find themselves ââ¬Ëblood-shod,ââ¬â¢ rather than being bare foot. The word shod is an old English term for shoeing a horse, again negative connotation of the infantrymen as sub-human beings. Lines 5 and 7 give depth to the state of despondency that general infantrymen are in. Owen chooses the phrase ââ¬ËDrunk with fatigueââ¬â¢ to show the depth of exhaustion the infantrymen are experiencing. To be drunk, as to be intoxicated with the absolute exhaustion; denoting fatigue as some drug that overwhelms the senses and coordination. They do not give credence to the reality they are in until a gas shell sends them into an ââ¬Ëecstasy of fumblingââ¬â¢ for a gas mask. Ecstasyââ¬â¢ is used not to give the connotation of delight and happiness, but rather the stark contrast of frenzy. Lines 9 and 11 end with ââ¬Ëfumblingââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëstumblingââ¬â¢, respectively, to give depth the infantrymenââ¬â¢s state of condition. Later, in lines 14 and 16, an association is draw between the engulfing gas and a man drowning. Owen depicts a ma n in a green sea drowning (line 14) to be later plunging at him (line 16); both giving the allusion between being engulfed in water or noxious gas. Again, in line 17, Owen asks the reader to ââ¬Ëpace.. in some smothering dreamââ¬â¢; a reoccurring theme of being deprived of air. The second stanza utilizes the most guttural connotation of such words as to describe the corpse. From the ââ¬Ëgarglingâ⬠¦froth-corrupted lungsââ¬â¢, to the ââ¬Ëvile, incurable soresââ¬â¢, Owen wants to galvanize the true wickedness of war. The reader is told of how gas can ââ¬Ëcorrupt lungsââ¬â¢ and put ââ¬Ësores on innocent tonguesââ¬â¢. This contrast is vital because it depicts how war can taint that which is most holy. In saying that the corpseââ¬â¢s face hung ââ¬Ëlike a devilââ¬â¢s sick of sin,ââ¬â¢ gives yet another reference between evil and war, but it has another meaning. To imply the devil would be overwhelmed with such amount of evil implies that one cannot grasp the horrors of war. The poem then ends with a sort of thesis statement that to die for oneââ¬â¢s country is neither right nor sweet. Dulce begins as a slow trudge of despondent soldiers, to a fanatic race for safety, then a slow, visceral portrayal of life being wrenched away from man, opposed to the titles suggestion for war hysteria and propaganda. But the main theme is not to just illustrate the dregs of war but to give the reader the truth of war. He makes the reader place themselves on the front line to look death and despair in the eye.

Impact of War in Tim OBriens The Things They Carried :: Things They Carried Essays
Impact of War in Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried à à For young people, the Vietnam War is a thing of the past and they can only learn about it from second hand sources. In Tim O'brien's The Things They Carried, it becomes very apparent that the Vietnam conflict has proved to be one that many of the participants have not been able move away from, while getting on with their lives. Oà ²brien shows that the conflict takes on a parasitic form that eats away on its victims for the rest of their lives. à à A parasite is defined as an organism that grows, feeds, and is sheltered on or in a different organism while harming its host. The war in this case takes the place of the organism, and the host becomes the soldiers. There are several examples of the parasitic nature of war through out the book. In one particular section, Tim O'Brien returns to Vietnam with his daughter. Twenty years had gone by, but it seems as though all of his thoughts are geared back to the time he had spent in the jungle so long before.à The two of them travel all over the country, but before their departure, he returns to the field where he feels he lost everything.à On this list he includes his honor, his best friend, and all faith in himself. For O'Brien, evidence of the parasite is not solely in his return Vietnam, but rather a constant personal preoccupation that seems to flow through the collection of stories. O'Brien shows how the memories of the war take on a parasitic form, and uses himself as an example. à à In the chapter à ³Speaking of Courageà ², O'Brien introduces a character by the name of Norman Bowker. In the story Norman finds him self home after serving his time in Vietnam. Even though he is back in his home town, things do not seem the same to him. The was seems to have put a new spin on his life. Most of the story he spends driving in circles while thinking about the war and his lack of place in his old society. The war becomes his whole life, and he feels as though he is to far distant from the town people for them to understand. The reader then finds out that Bowker

Physics of a Rockets Trajectory :: physics rocket rockets trajectory science
Missing equations / figures We as humans have always been fascinated with the unknown.ï ¿ ½ We seek to conquer every frontier.ï ¿ ½ Today, the final frontier is space.ï ¿ ½ So, many people are very interested in rockets, the vehicle for conquering the final frontier.ï ¿ ½ Most people have a general idea of how rockets work, but very few have an understanding of the physics behind their flight, which scientists spent many years perfecting. Rocket propulsion is not like many other kinds of propulsion that are based on the principle of a rotation based engine.ï ¿ ½ For example, a car engine produces rotational energy to turn the wheels of the car.ï ¿ ½ And, a airplane engine produces rotational energy to spin a turbine.ï ¿ ½ But, rocket propulsion is based on Newtonï ¿ ½s Third Law, which says that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.ï ¿ ½ So, rockets work by pushing fuel out the back, which in turn pushes the rocket forward.ï ¿ ½ The mass of the fuel pushed out the back of the rocket multiplied by the velocity of the fuel is equal to the mass of the rocket multiplied by the velocity of the rocket in the opposite direction.ï ¿ ½ Although there is always some energy loss in any type of engine, the rocket is propelled forward. There are many forces that a rocket must overcome, especially during liftoff.ï ¿ ½ Newtonï ¿ ½s second law says that force is equal to mass times acceleration (F=ma).ï ¿ ½ However, for a rocket the calculations are not that simple because the rocketï ¿ ½s mass is always changing as it burns up fuel.ï ¿ ½ So, we have to replace a new term with F, leading to ï ¿ ½where is a term for the thrust of the rocket and it is defined by R, the fuel consumption rate, and is the fuelï ¿ ½s exhaust speed relative to the rocket.ï ¿ ½ Also, we replace m with M and define M as the instantaneous mass of the rocket, including the unexpended fuel. We also have to incorporate the other forces acting on the rocket, such as gravity and air resistance.ï ¿ ½ The force of gravity is equal to mg.ï ¿ ½ The force of air resistance is ï ¿ ½where C is the drag coefficient, is the air density, A is the cross-sectional area of the body perpendicular to the velocity, and v is the velocity.ï ¿ ½ By themselves, these formulas seem somewhat easy, but a rocketï ¿ ½s flight incorporates many variable forces that make the calculations much more difficult.ï ¿ ½ We have already examined the rocketï ¿ ½s upward force and how the changing mass makes the force vary.

Nationalism. Custom Nationalism Essay Writing Service || Nationalism Essay samples, help The concept of nationalism is quite complicated, and many scholars still debate about it in academic circles. Nationalism has been defined differently by scholars who have developed various schools of thought about it. ââ¬Å"Nationalism involves a proper classification of a group of people with a political unit stated in national termsâ⬠à (Allan, 2004). It can also be explained as a unifying factor since it aims at uniting a group of people who share common social and cultural values. Many historians believe that nationalism began in the post medieval period in Europe. According to Kohn, nationalism began in 1642, while Acton believes that it started developing during the partition of Poland in 1772. However, Kedourie contends that it began in 1806 in Berlin. Many scholars believe that it originated during the French Revolution that took place in 1789. ââ¬Å"This is because the French Rev olution introduced the aspects of nationalist ideas, which were brewing up during the past two centuriesâ⬠à (Smith, 2001). Trevor Roper traces the origin of nationalism in Germany, and Hungary. From these territories, it was spread to Eastern and Southern Europe by intelligentsias. The idea of nationalism later spread to Asia and Africa. This paper seeks to discuss how nationalism led to European interest in both Africa and Asia. Nationalism became one of the major developments that took place during the period of 19thcentury. ââ¬Å"During this period, nationalism was witnessed in various European territories such as Italy, Germany and Franceâ⬠à (Allan, 2004). The 19thà century was also characterized by despotic regimes like Germany, which dominated international politics. In 1871, there was a significant development in Germany, which changed its role in world affairs. In this case, it became unified, and this made it more stable than before. Just like other freshly f ormed states, Germany increasingly became nationalistic, and it wanted to assert its self both politically and economically. In this case, Germany had to seek extra territories overseas. This condition was exacerbated by the fact that the German merchants wanted more commercial opportunities abroad. Hence, they encouraged their government to acquire more territories on their behalf. This trend prevailed among other European powers including Britain. France also found it necessary to engage in overseas expansion owing to the circumstances it had found itself in during the Franco Prussian War. Due to the humiliation it suffered during this war, France decided to replace its lost provinces by seeking territories overseas. Hence, France shifted its focus to Africa. For example, it occupied Egypt for sometime before the British it. On the other hand, Britain keenly examined these new developments, and it became concerned about the increased European activities in Asia and Africa. Thus, it went a head and established more territories in Asia and Africa. For instance, it annexed India due to its commercial potential. It then annexed Egypt and the East African Coast because they were strategic. Other than commercial interests, possession of many colonies was associated with pride and power. Consequently, many European powers strived to acquire many colonies in order to prove their political strength. Indeed, this was a significant aspect of nationalism during this time frame.Lastly, nationalism also coincided with industrial revolution, and this caused a great need for markets and investment opportunities in foreign territories. Conclusion The spread of nationalism did not stop at the end of 19thà century, but it continued even in the 20thcentury. Many African countries fought for self determination after the Second World War, and they mainly used the nationalist ideologies. Nationalism is still being practiced even at present. For example, a wave of nationalism recen tly emerged in Arab countries such as Egypt Yemen, Tunisia, and Libya. These revolutions clearly demonstrate that despotic regimes still exist, and many people are still fighting for nationalism even after achieving independence. Nationalism, therefore, remains one of the greatest developments that started in 19thà century. Love for oneââ¬â¢s own country Loving oneââ¬â¢s own country is closely associated with patriotism. Patriotism is a loyal feeling which one has about his own country. one must have a deep and passionate loyal feeling about his country. One of these feelings of one man in a country is upsurge and unhonoured. The feeling has kindled many dormant nations into actions.History is filled up with instances where patriotic people under able leadership have saved their land. He has to encourage the art and à trade of his country. He must support his country as his duty. He shall never do anything that would bring down the fair name and image of his country. In the present context of the world the narrow patriotism is nearly out moded. ountry however powerful or rich can stand isolated. The world is shining with the fast mode of communication and no country is too far away. The complex economy of the world has every country dependent on one another. Self-contained condition is only a thing of past, every culture today is what it has rowed from culture. No culture can boast of being pure. so there is no meaning in narrow nationalisation . it is safe to conclude that fantastic patriotism is bad though loving ones country for beherment and good deals is a noble act. Being proud of India is not enough. Resolve to do something in your lifetime that India will be proud of

Why Water Is More Dense Than Ice
Why Water Is More Dense Than Ice Water is unusual in that its maximum density occurs as a liquid, rather than as a solid. This means ice floats on water. Density is the mass per unit volume of a material. For all substances, density changes with temperature. The mass of material does not change, but the volume or space that it occupies either increases or decreases with temperature. The vibration of molecules increases as temperature rises and they absorb more energy. For most substances, this increases the space between molecules, making warmer liquids less dense than cooler solids. Its All About Hydrogen Bonds However, this effect is offset in water by hydrogen bonding. In liquid water, hydrogen bonds connect each waterà molecule to approximately 3.4 other water molecules. When water freezes into ice, it crystallizes into a rigid lattice that increases the space between molecules, with eachà molecule hydrogen bonded to 4 other molecules.

Relationship between ownership structure, investment and corporate Essay
Relationship between ownership structure, investment and corporate value - Essay Example f such literature talks about the relationship between managerial ownership levels, the direct investment decisions made by management and the natural value of the firm. Moreover, there were many arguing studies done in almost the same year from different authors and researchers. Just like Morck, Shleifer and Vishny (1988), McConnell and Servaes (1990), and Hermalin and Weisbach (1991) provide facts and verification of a significant non-linear relationship between corporate value and managerial ownership. They argue that corporate value increases with management equity holdings to a particular level after which entrenchment behavior becomes dominant, resulting into a decrease in firm value. Out of the three studies, it was only McConnell and Servaes (1990) that have reported no change in the relationship between corporate value and managerial holdings at certain high levels of equity ownership. However, such earlier findings were found to formulate doubts when compared to works of Cho (1998) and Himmelberg, Hubbard and Palia (1999). Cho (1998) showed that managerial ownership had no effect on corporate value and investment but the only the corporate value that had a considerable impact on managerial ownership through the application of a two-stage least squares methodology. One must choose an ownership structure prior to starting a business. It may come into varying types of ownership whether sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation (for-profit and nonprofit), cooperative, or limited liability company (LLC). Although these types are being utilized by many businesses, there is no one preference that fits for every business. This is for the reason that each of these ownership structures has its certain advantages and disadvantages in a business and thus the choice of ownership structure depends on the form that would best suit and meet its needs. In saying so, there would be a need for a careful evaluation of the most important considerations in
Criminal Behavior and the Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Criminal Behavior and the Law - Essay Example Finally, the paper will discuss the differences between index-one and index-two crimes under the FBIââ¬â¢s Uniform Crime Reports, as well as which of the two is classified under violent crime and the one classified under property crime. To begin with, criminologist and criminalists are terms more than often used interchangeably, according to Williams and McShane (2004). However, the two terms have some distinct differences that are worth noting. Williams and McShane (2004) note that criminologists deal with the study of behaviors of an individual in relation to crime, individuals who commits the crimes being studied, as well as the correctional facilities for criminals such as jails and prisons. This falls under criminology, which covers various fields of criminal justice, with emphasis on social behavior. Criminalists, on the other hand, are professionals charged with the responsibility of analysis criminal evidence at the scenes of crime such as bullets and bloodstains (Williams and McShane, 2004). They are also charged with the responsibility of recreating crimes scenes, work at crime scenes, laboratories, and courtrooms. Criminologists engage mainly in teaching and research, where they apply the knowledge to the administration and policing, study of public policy, drug addictions, correction, juvenile delinquency, correctional administration and policy, and victimology. Other areas of study include criminal ethnography, theoretical criminology and models or criminal behaviors (Williams and McShane, 2004). Criminologists also assist in analyzing psychological, sociological, and biological evidence such as finger and footprints, body fluids, and blood plaster using their skills and knowledge to establish the link between the suspect and the crime. Criminalist, on the other hand, is a professional who employs scientific techniques to identify and separate vital evidence from the scene of a crime (Williams and McShane, 2004). The evidence gathered is analyze d and interpret, establish the truth as regards the crime. Forensic psychologists are professionals who by virtue of their training apply psychology in a criminal investigation and law (Fulero and Wrightsman, 2009). Forensic psychologists play a big role in assisting fact finders or courts in arriving at a just and precise conclusion of a criminal case. They are often involved in insurance claims, custody disputes, and lawsuits, according to Fulero and Wrightsman (2009). Legal justice system uses forensic psychologists in analyzing the mental status of the accused before, during, and after the trial proceedings. For instance, criminal cases whose verdicts may be death penalty always require that before the accused is handed the sentence, a forensic psychologist is called to analyze the defendants mental status before, during and after the crime to establish whether the defendant was insane at the time of the crime or not. The analysis of mental status of the defendant in a case is i mportant since it aids in just and accurate decision making by the jury. White-collar vs. Blue-collar crimes Crimes are committed by different classes of people. In this regard, O'Hear (2001) defines the white-collar crime as a financially motivated crime committed by respected people with high social status in society. This crime is committed by high-class individuals who have inherited or earn a lot of money at the upper level jobs such as corporate bigwigs (O'Hear,

Kettle Mountain Mining Company Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Kettle Mountain Mining Company - Case Study Example To be exact, as per the investment analysis, the railway project is estimated to cost (80,000,000 + 25,000,000 + 1,000,000) = 106,000,000. However, if the Federal Government accepts the companyââ¬â¢s petition for subsidy, the share of the project cost to the Kettle mining company would be (106,000,000*0.5) = $ 53,000,000. The subsidy would help reduce the burden of the project for the company. Therefore, Dr. Rousseau should consider going public to raise the amount required for investment. Secondly, if, as is recommended, the Kettle mining Company decides to go public, the companyââ¬â¢s capital structure must change to reflect the debt borrowed from the public through the issuance of an IPO. In that case, Dr. Rousseau, who seems to oppose the IPO option must make sacrifices and relinquish a portion of the companyââ¬â¢s control to the new shareholders. The IPO is the best option since it provides a long-term source of funds, which is appropriate for investments such as railro ad development. It is also important to consider the fact that a loan from a bank has been negotiated at a cost of 11%. This source of finance will increase the companyââ¬â¢s weighted cost of capital to 5.8%. Comparatively, the IPO option is better than the loan option for the reason that the loan restricts the companyââ¬â¢s decision-making and must be called back on maturity, while the IPO can only be called back when the company goes under receivership (CMA Canada, n.d, p. 1-3). Third, currently, the company heavily relies on road and air transportation media. The cost of the road transportation during winter totals to $ 2 million and that of air transportation during the spring and summer totals to $ 3.5 million. If the project is undertaken, these costs will be avoided. In addition, the train is expected to provide transport and freight services to residents of Carlsbad and Whitehorse, which is expected to generate revenues.
